Facade Recoup

Milwaukee’s renaissance has been widely noted for the new development brought to the central business district, but it only takes a short walk along the historic street fronts to see the advantage of having a diverse and rich architectural heritage. Situated in the East Side Historic District in Juneau Town, this project salvaged the remaining skeleton of two facades lost to past redevelopment that removed poorly performing upper floors.

It's All in the Details

Research with the City Historian uncovered street photography showing the original facades. Rather than recreating the past, the project focused on combining human scale and visually interesting features of the historic facades with modern materials and technique. The result preserves the rich architectural characteristics of the original buildings and with good urban form compliments the physical scale and character of the surrounding neighborhood.
